Les Chataigniers is a classic ‘courtyard farm’. A spacious stone farmhouse with its adjoining ‘dining deck’, six ensuite double bedrooms, an enormous games room across the courtyard and a swimming pool with a fantastic unspoilt view.

The property is nestled in the southern corner of a rural hilltop hamlet in the ‘Segala’ region (le pays de cents vallees) of SW France on the borders of the Tarn and Aveyron departments. At 500m. altitude, it overlooks its 8 acre meadow and its woods leading to the stream in the valley below. On some days, the clarity of the atmosphere can give views of the Pyrenees some 150 miles to the south – a particularly exciting sight at sunset.

Close to bastide and market towns Najac, Cordes, Museum of Toulouse-Lautrec at Albi etc; Water sports, horse riding, fishing, golf, walks all close by. Airports: Rodez 50 mins, Toulouse 90mins..

Reception Rooms:

The beamed sitting room, dining room, well equipped kitchen with dining deck – for eating ‘under the stars’ – adjoin each other giving an easy flow of activities, inside and out, amongst friends or family.

Kitchen: 2 x modern electric ovens, 4x electric hobs, 2x gas hobs, ‘American’ style fridge/freezer with ice maker, electric blender, whisk, kettle, toaster, pots and pans for major meal, dishwasher, 2x independent sinks, plenty of cupboard space and drawers.

Dining Room: Rustic heavy oak table and chairs for 12, crockery, cutlery, glasses, serving dishes etc. more than adequate for 12.

Dining Deck: Table/chairs for 12.

Sitting Room: Comfortable sofas and chairs, TV, video/DVD player, CD/Radio. An ‘Insert’ log burning fire is fitted for spring/autumn chilly evenings.

Cloakroom: wc/washbasin.

Hall: Large rustic carved cupboard and drawers. Coat/hat-stand.

Cellar: Washing machine, sink, clothes hanging near boiler. Oil-fired boiler for domestic hot water and central heating in winter.

Bedrooms:

Les Chataigniers retains the rustic nature of our region but the six spacious bedrooms are individually decorated with attractive soft furnishings – the curtains and their pelmets being particularly noticeable. Each has its own ‘salle de douche’ [wc/shower/basin] ensuite facilities. There are 2x bedrooms downstairs and 4x upstairs.

Downstairs-
Sumac room: Double bed [standard]. Windows out on to the courtyard and to the sumac tree and other stone buildings of the hamlet. Soft blue décor with ‘floaty’ voile curtains. En suite ‘salle de douche’.

Brass room: Standard double bed. Window with outlook towards Judas tree and other stone buildings of the hamlet. Ensuite salle de douche.

Upstairs-
Sunset room: Twin or double bed. Has been made into a ‘four bed dormitory’ when there are 4 children in the visiting party who can share a room [e.g. Cousins]. This is the largest room with the most attractive long view to the south and to the courtyard at the side. Room for cot. . Soft blue décor with ‘floaty’ voile curtains. En suite ‘salle de douche’.

Wardrobe room: Twin or double bed. A room of character with its original built-in walnut wardrobe and its view over the courtyard. Soft peach decor and off white textured fabric curtains. Room for cot. Ensuite salle de douche.

Birdsong room: Twin or double bed. Outlook to the east at Judas and Lime trees and other stone buildings of the hamlet. Room for cot. Soft yellow decor with floral motif curtains. Ensuite salle de douche.

Lime tree room: Twin or double bed. Outlook to the east at Judas and Lime trees and other stone buildings of the hamlet. Soft yellow decor with floral motif curtains. Room for cot. Ensuite salle de douche.

 
Outside:

Courtyard: This large open space [9m x 7m] allows an evening game of ‘boules’, a barbecue by the farmhouse steps and freedom for young children to run around in safety [cars parked outside the courtyard].

Clubhouse: An enormous space [9m x 7m], across the courtyard, with table-tennis, seating and cold drinks fridge where you can hide from the noonday sun or enjoy a game of table tennis etc.

Swimming pool: Out from the clubhouse across a terrace, with chairs and tables, and down the steps is the 8m x 5m ‘pool with a view’ with its wood clad surrounds and sundeck with sun loungers. The pool is fenced and all accesses locked to enable adult supervision. Swimming pool towels are provided

Lawned Terrace: Down the steps from the pool, and from the courtyard, shaded by a willow tree for those who want to escape the ‘bustle’ of the swimming pool area. From here you can reach the grassed area below the pool to play badminton or kick a ball around.

Meadow: Below the complex of Les Chataigniers is the 8 acre meadow for you to enjoy the space or adventure down into the woods to the stream below and onwards up the other side of the deep valley to La Salvetat-Peyrales.

Campels [your hamlet], Post box, mobile baker, butcher and grocer call on set days each week.

La Salvetat-Peyrales [5mins]: Baker, butcher, grocer, tabac/newsagent, post office, internet access, garage, fuel, restaurant, bar, tourist office. Fishmonger calls on Saturday morning.

Rieupeyroux[15mins]: All the above plus banks [incl. ‘hole in the wall’] and Intermarche supermarket. Fishmonger calls on Friday morning.

Carmaux [35mins]: Large HyperU and Intermarche supermarkets plus as above. Weekly market.

Villefranche de Rouergue[30mins]: HyperU, Leclerc, Intermarche hypermarkets, boutiques plus as above. Attractive weekly market.

Rodez[45mins]: Geant, Leclerc, Intermarche huge hypermarkets plus all the above.

Albi[45mins]: as Rodez. Toulouse[90mins]: Major attractive mediaeval city with all the above and more.

 
 
Things to do
 

The whole area is rich in history back to Roman times, through the period of the independent nobles, the hundred years’ wars, the inquisition, and the crusades particularly against the ‘Albigensian Heresy’ and the Cathars in the 12th./13th. Centuries).

The region abounds with chateaux, cathedrals/ churches, Manoir etc. from those early turbulent years of Europe. Bastide towns at Najac, Cordes, Villefranche de Rouergue, La Sauveterre de Rouergue, are all close by.

Colourful weekly markets take place in the local towns. Fetes, with their traditional ‘Repas Dansant’ in the villages. Albi’s heritage including the Toulouse-Lautrec museum and many more. The beautiful new viaduct at Millau, designed by Norman Foster, and the cheese factories for the famous Roquefort blue cheese are within easy driving distance.

Walks: Well marked tracks from your doorstep.

Water: Levezou[50mins] all sports on 1,800 hectare area: Najac[20mins]: Aveyron river canoeing, La Roque[15mins] Viaur River swim, BBQ and, picnic and many more.

Horse riding: Vabre-tizac[20mins] plus many others.

All Leisure: Cap Decouvert centre, Carmaux [40 mins] – dry ski, water-ski, skateboard, swim lake/pool+slides etc.

Bicycle: ‘Off piste’ or road. Golf: Albi and Rodez [45mins].

Tennis: La Salvetat-Peyrales[5mins].

Food: This region specialises in Duck, ‘Veau d’Aveyron’ and excellent cheeses. Wines from the Marcillac, Gaillac Languedoc and other SW regions. Regional menus from simple up to Michelin one star within 40 mins and closer.

We recommend that you purchase the Michelin map No:235 – Midi-Pyrenees 1cm=2km or Michelin No:338 Local – Tarn et Aveyron – they cover the area that you are likely to explore and Campels is marked if you are lost. The local tourist offices have an abundance of good free information, some of which we try to provide you with at Les Chataigniers. Optionally, we give you a ‘briefing’ on the Sunday morning of your arrival to orientate you towards our facilities, local shops, sites, entertainments, fetes etc.
